I could not sleep, the events of the day revolving through my mind like a wheel that would not slow—the study, his hands, his voice calling me little one while he slid this ring onto my finger. I looked at it now, a large diamond catching what little light seeped through the cracks, pretty against my skin, heavy with meaning I did not want to carry.
